Since I had a couple days before I was getting to my friend’s place in Rock Hill, I stopped at a couple places first. I headed back north and west towards Richmond so I could go to Monticello. Plus, it was a dog friendly place. I pre-purchased my ticket online, since it saves a few bucks – though unfortunately not the line. The shuttle from the visitors center up to the house is not dog friendly, so we had to do the walk, which was mostly in the shade. On the path up, there is the cemetery where Jefferson is buried.
Even though I wasn’t allowed to tour the house, they do have outdoor tours. Jasper and I went on the garden tour, the guide was engaging and knew her stuff. The flowers were pretty, and the garden was huge. It was an enjoyable way to spend an afternoon.
I wasn’t able to visit the gift shop with Jasper, so we headed out and found a couple dog friendly wineries. First Colony Vineyard was $9 for 8 tastes, Jasper was allowed inside the tasting room so that was convenient. The wine was fairly good. And a couple people next to me told me that the Trump Winery had a great view and good wine, so I headed there next.
Jasper wasn’t allowed inside their tasting room, but they have a big covered patio, as well as lots of chairs in the yard overlooking the valley. The tasting was $12 for 4 tastes, but you get to keep the glass. The staff was friendly, but they were closing the place and I was getting pretty hungry. So I found a place for a burger (it was sooo good!) and took it back to my hotel for the evening and relaxed in my room for the evening.
