Days 54-56 – Gaithersburg, MD

Continuing my journey south, I made a stop with another cousin in Maryland. En route, I attempted to make an impulsive stop in Wilmington, DE…. but after a quick drive, no safe place to stop and look up a place to go, I got out of dodge with doors locked. I found a better stop at an old Georgian manor house – Hampton National Historic Site in Townson, MD. A place they allow you to walk the grounds with your dog, and where we almost got caught in a rainstorm.

Like before, it is always a little different coming to a family member’s house that you don’t know very well. But my hosts were gracious, and we found mutual interests in drinking :). They were also open to finding patios for pups. Jasper was able to join in on all the adventuring that weekend.

Friday night we went to a local wine and beer bar for a couple drinks on a small outdoor patio, then moved to a kabob house for dinner. Saturday, we took off for George Washington’s house – Mt. Vernon is pretty, and while we couldn’t tour the house…(the line was ridiculously long) there was more than enough to see otherwise. We found a great pizza place in Frederick for a late lunch (and some beers). After some relaxing at home from a long day in the sun, we finished up the night with some beer and wine at Beers & Cheers.

The next morning we headed to another historical site – Antietam. Battle sites are great places to go with pets, as they are so large, you need a car to drive between stops – which means fido can easily join. For lunch, we found a dog friendly patio – which also happened to a large beer list.

Sunday night we stayed in, had some bbq’d chicken and drinks. The weekend passed quickly, and I was headed to Gettysburg. It was so great to get to know my family better, and they were such generous hosts! But sadly my time in Maryland was to an end!
