Days 17-18 – Indianapolis, IN

Finally, back on my way east, I made it to my hostel in Indianapolis around 4. And on my way, I hit a huge milestone – I hit 100,000 miles in Meredith (my Mini). For $30 in a all girls dorm room that sleeps 6, I feel like I got a great deal. Only had a roommate one night, and the room to myself after that. The hostel felt European, it was clean, in a decent neighborhood (but not in walking distance to downtown), and quiet.

There wasn’t a ton of food options, but I did find a place (Aristocrat Pub and Restaurant) that was open and allowed Jasper to sit on the outside of the patio (always a rough way to go for the little man), but they did bring him water. I got the recommended pork loin sandwich (from Swarm)…and had to ask how to eat it. I’ve never seen such a large piece of pounded meat (ha). I was worried it was going to be dry, but it wasn’t at all!

On my walk back to the hostel, I saw what I thought were ashes… and then I realized what they were – fireflies! Oh wow, those are so cool and I walked the rest of the way home with a big grin on my face, actively searching the ground for more of those little lightening wonders.

The next morning, I headed downtown. What a quiet little place, it was mid-week and just felt like no one was there. We found the Canal Walk and walked along the 3 mile loop, stopping briefly at the Burgerhaus for a beer and a salad. And I found that while it appeared there was no one downtown, when I tried to leave the parking garage it was a 4 story backup. I guess they were all in meetings??

My hostel host mentioned Metazoa Brewing as a good place for dogs and beer – so we headed that way around 3pm. Something super cool about Metazoa – they donate 5% of profits to animals and wildlife organizations! It was quiet as well, the bartender said it would get busier later with people showing up for trivia (which for me is the cue to bow out – I HATE trivia night). The beer was good, and as promised, I was allowed to bring Jasper inside. For food, they had a menu of multiple food trucks to order from using Cluster Truck. I got a pizza, which I finished later that night for dinner.

After our day of walking in the sun, I decided to stay in for the night. I had to remind myself that I couldn’t stay busy constantly, and that it was okay to take it easy. I finished some wine, chatted with the group of guys there playing Mario Kart Smash, and watched more drag racing before calling it a night.

On my way south to Kentucky, I got some ice cream at Graeter’s and saw more gorgeous old houses in the Meridian Kessler neighborhood.

Stayed At: Indy Hostel – $30 a night #dogfriendly

Ate At: (1) Aristocrat Pub & Restaurant – $11 Breaded Tenderloin, $5.96 Lakefront Smash IPA; (2) Metazoa Brewing – $6 per beer, $13 thai pizza (plus tax and tip – ended up being $17…kinda a lot); Graeter’s Ice Cream – $1.95 small Black Raspberry Chocolate Chip

  1. Good for you for taking some down time. One of my favorite nights in Ireland was playing banana grams at that hostel in Galway 🙂
